NH Technology: Pushing digital media to its limits
By Basheera Khan
NH Technology is a specialist in the field of audiovisual, multimedia and desktop video, involved in almost any discipline where video
and computer technologies converge. Based in Swansea, the company was founded by Norman Harris in 1987, when he started producing high
quality graphics for small video companies.
When some clients decided to purchase their own equipment, NH Technology moved into a supply and support role. One such client at the
time, was the Meteorological Office, which used an NH Technology system to produce their own videos from graphics of weather
data.
Current services includes converting video footage
to and from electronic file formats including streaming
video, DVD and VideoCD authoring, creating digital messaging systems for point-of-information or exhibition displays, animating company
logos, and producing corporate presentations on video or computer.
Harris explains, "Most of the work is done on a broadcast post-production suite, ensuring the highest quality output but at very
competitive rates. For example, we can put messages onto ready-made high impact backgrounds to give an eye-catching display that even the
smallest of businesses could afford. These can be used on stands at exhibitions, or to provide an impressive introduction on computer
based business presentations."
In addition to running NH Technology, Harris is involved in group and individual training. He also regularly contributes product reviews
and tutorials to video and computer magazines of interest to businesses as well as individuals.
"In some respects the journalistic side of the business has helped enormously in keeping up with technology. Writing has given me the
opportunity to evaluate which hardware and software works best, and to develop that information for the benefit of the business."
NH Technology was recently involved in one of the fastest store revamps in the retail trade, when Virgin transformed almost 100 stores
into 'an interactive shopping experience', within a matter of months. In addition to providing a support role for the specialist video
equipment installed in the stores, the company continued to format and schedule the display content.
One of the company's key strengths, says Harris, is the ability to provide what the customer wants, when very often they don't know
themselves.
"It's not unusual for customers to contact us with only a vague idea of what they want to achieve, or sometimes they've heard a buzzword
and think that's what they need, when there may be better solutions. So wherever possible we'll ensure that the customer is fully aware
of any alternatives, so they are able to make an informed decision on which route to take. In effect we ensure that the customer gets the
best from the existing technology, often by pushing that technology to its limits."
Though the business is driven by new and emerging technologies, the technology which has benefited NH Technology most, says Harris, is
e-mail, and the flexible communications opportunities it presents. "I talk to companies all over the world and e-mail is by far the
easiest and most cost effective means of communicating."
As to the future of the business, Harris comments, "Naturally we'll continue to change along with the technology, and who's to say where
that will take us in a few years time. Whatever route it takes we're ready to take on the challenge, as the enthusiasm is just as strong
now as it ever was."
