Ffab Productions: A unique blend of art and science

Phil MoranFfab Productions Ltd is an Aberystwyth-based production company, creating video and multimedia for any purpose, including training and promotional material, documentaries and television material. The company manages complete projects, from design to duplication.

The company is a continuation of Dr. Phil Moran's earlier work as a sole trader, during which time Moran met and worked with Alun Owen, an interactive designer. Their first combined project was a CD-ROM for the University of Wales. They quickly saw that their skills complemented each other and have not looked back since.

Moran says, "I received a Knowledge Exploitation Fund scholarship to help me become self-employed last year. The scholarship gave me a small income for about 9 months and enabled me to promote myself and build up my contacts. This breathing space was essential and I would not still be trading now without it."

ITW: What's unique/outstanding about the products/services you provide?

PM: We bring together the best of film-making skill and interactive art. It's easy to put video on CD-ROMs - as many companies do - but we always plan, film and edit to make interesting short films combing music,
presenting, voice-overs and graphics, so that the user is kept engaged.

Alun Owen is one of the UK's leading interactive designers and has been in the business for over 20 years. I am a professional film-maker with a PhD in Physics. Combining our experience in the Arts and Sciences gives the best of both worlds. We also pride ourselves on reliability and customer service - of course!

Ffab Productions LtdITW: What one piece of technology has benefited your company the most?

PM: Tricky. We couldn't manage without computers - that goes without saying - but the software that develops and gets better year on year is incredible. On my Mac computer today, I can do pretty much everything they could do 12 years ago in the film Terminator 2.

ITW: What one piece of advice would you give to start up companies in your field?

PM: Be reliable. Everything is important, of course; networking, marketing, skill etc., but if you don't do for customers what you say you're going to do, you won't last long.

ITW: What's been the key to your success?

PM: Self belief. Never think anything is impossible. It's best to decide what you want to do and then decide how you're going to do it. Never go on solely what you can do. So often I hear people say things like, "I'd love to direct films" (for example), "but I don't know anything about film-making". You hear this all the time about all sorts of things, and it's really an excuse. If you want to direct films, but you don't know anything about film-making, all you need to do is learn out about film-making. Of course I'll probably trip myself up by over-reaching one day.

ITW: Where do you see your company going in the future?

PM: We've done a bit of television work so far and this is where we can get large contracts. In the next year we'll be placing a fair amount of effort in developing programme ideas for broadcast. We're presently doing some work with two comedy performers with a performance company called Ridiculusmus. These guys are very funny and very clever and we're certain to do something with them that will be broadcast.

Our long term aim is to make feature films and we have a quirky science fiction idea in development now. We even have a German production company interested in it, so this might not be as long term as we think.
