Profile: Accelero Digital Solutions Ltd.

by Sali Earls

Based in Bridgend, South Wales, Accelero Digital Solutions Ltd. was founded in January 2006 by Kelvin Jones and Wynne Crompton. The company offers a full range of software development and support services for financial, health, local authority, police and manufacturing sectors.

During the relatively short time since formation, they have very successfully been involved in some significant and high profile projects.

Sali Earls spoke to Wynne Crompton, Director and Company Secretary, to find out more.

What's the history of your company?
As a result of our long and varied experience of software development (40 years between us), Kelvin and I felt we understood what made software projects successful and recognised the pitfalls to avoid. We formed Accelero on the basis that we would apply good practice to ensure our ability to offer high quality software solutions competitively.

The company was registered in January 2006 and we have successfully built up a strong team with complementary skills enabling us to undertake projects in their entirety. These skills include project management, systems support and graphics design as well as core software engineering expertise.

We have successfully undertaken and have been involved in some significant and high profile projects. In particular we identify provision of a complete client-server and mobile working solution for Tokio Marine Europe Insurance (TMEI) - part of a major Japanese bank, and the use of our Software Development Framework at the core of critical security software at the new Terminal 5 development at Heathrow.

What unique products/services does your company provide?
We are focusing on 'mobile working' as our main focus for product development. The TMEI 'RiskNet' solution supports mobile workers throughout Europe as they undertake Insurance risk assessment and claim inspections for large manufacturing sites and commercial properties. Our very flexible Ayana platform is at the heart of the product involved and it consists of a server platform offering an interface to core business database systems and a client platform that communicates with the server to enable offline mobile working in a secure and resilient manner.

Our overall offering in this area includes Digital Pen and Paper as a means of enabling data gathering in a natural and traditional way - avoiding the cost of laptops, PDAs and the need for workers involved to be IT literate. We are particularly pleased with the success of our initial deployments in the Health Service projects undertaken for Torbay NHS Care Trust.

What's been the key to your success?
There is no doubt that the key to our success is a foundation of good practice together with the right people. The investment we have made in design and development of our development framework has proved its worth time and again. Its generic design has allowed deployment in surprisingly diverse applications allowing us to develop solutions quickly, cost effectively and consistently - leading to advantages in terms of ease of maintenance and debug.

We have gained the respect of our customers through the quality of our work, open attitude and ability to respond quickly and flexibly to customer requests.

What one piece of outside technology has benefited your company most?
Anoto technologies for Digital Pen and Paper and Vision Objects Handwriting-Recognition libraries. These are fundamental to our PC-Pen solution and development of such technology from scratch would have been beyond our reach.

What one piece of advice would you give to start-up companies in your field?
Make sure you employ the right people both in terms of skills and attitude toward building the company's success. Don't be over optimistic, it's a very tough business!

Value and treat every customer with equal respect. At the end of the day it is quality and reputation that will lead to success.

Where do you see your company going in the future?
We are just entering our third year and moving into new premises next month. We will complete development of new products by early summer and aim to expand steadily as we gain business.

Our ambitions are to be recognised as a high quality solution provider particularly with regard to mobile working solutions and bespoke application development.
