Touching Virtual Environments and Reverse Engineering

Tuesday 5 August 2008
6.00pm - 8.00pm
(Doors open at 5.30pm for a buffet and refreshments)

Technium CAST
Parc Menai, Bangor

Guest speakers: Prof. Nigel John, School of Computer Science at Bangor University and Ian Thompson Business Development Engineer at Menai College

Nigel is head of research at the School of Computer Science Bangor University, and will be presenting some of the cutting edge work being undertaken in field of virtual environments at Bangor. Examples range from training in medical procedure, such as a needle puncture, to the interpretation of data for blind people.

Computer scientists predict that the next hardware revolution will deal with the sense of touch, and this talk addresses the potential impact of haptic display devices (Greek, ‘hapto’ to fasten) in virtual environments. Commercial haptic devices have been available for several years, but it is only recently that a cost effective device of sufficient fidelity has become available.

Ian works within Coleg Menai’s CAM department as a Business Development Engineer; contacting local SME’s to increase awareness about the facilities and services offered by the college Menai team.

Ian will present another side of 3D imaging with particular reference to commercial exploitation of the latest technology in laser imaging devices. Using a laser scanner Ian will demonstrate how the process of reverse engineering, and the sequencing involved in reaching a solid model from raw data, is becoming a more realistic manufacturing option for small projects. The 3D scanning demonstration will unfold the many inexpensive ways laser scanning and 3D printing can benefit large or small companies.

This event forms part of the ITWales Software Developers programme, which is supported by the Welsh Assembly Government.
