IT skills shortage opens door to women

The skills shortage currently being suffered by the UK's technology industry has opened the door to a wide range of opportunities for women pursuing careers in IT, it has been claimed.

According to womenintechnology.co.uk, an online networking group for women working in the technology industry, a number of women are put off IT jobs by the preconception that it is a 'geeky' profession.

Maggie Berry, director of the website, said that the industry must to more to attract female talent, noting that new training and development programmes, as well as flexible working schemes, could be beneficial.

"Technology is an innovative and ever-evolving industry which is exciting to be a part of and allows you to work with cutting edge technology that has a direct impact on the success of a business," she said.

"There are so many different ways you can get involved with the industry and due to widespread skill shortages there are a big range of opportunities available."

Research published by Gartner this month suggests that there is a significant gender gap in the IT industry, with technology jobs failing to appeal to 51 per cent of women.
