Internet providers 'must deliver on download speed'

Internet service providers should ensure above anything else that they deliver on promised download speeds if they wish to enjoy customer satisfaction from both leisure users and businesses, a new study by Top 10 Broadband has revealed.

The broadband comparison website explained that download speeds are the primary factor by which consumers rate different broadband suppliers, noting that the top three fastest providers were also the three highest rated.

"This report sends an indisputable message to broadband providers to speed up or face the wrath of disappointed customers," said Jessica McArdle, a representative of Top 10 Broadband.

"BT's planned infrastructure upgrade, which will provide super-fast ADSL2+ download speeds across the UK starting at the end of the month, cannot come soon enough."

The survey of over 90,000 broadband users indicated that the average speed of UK broadband connections is just 3.18Mbps, despite the fact that the majority advertise speeds of up to 8Mpbs and beyond.

Various consumer groups have been increasing the pressure on telecoms regulator Ofcom to demand changes in the way that broadband providers advertise their products, so as to ensure they quote average rather than maximum speeds.
