Malware report highlights areas of attack

A new malware report by managed services firm Akamai has revealed that nearly a third of all internet attacks originated in the US and China during the first quarter of 2008.

The 'State of the Internet' report, the first in a new quarterly series, revealed that distributed denial of service attacks targeting exploits and attacks on specific ports used for remote procedure calling (RPC) and shared storage services were popular among hackers.

First quarter malware traffic was generated from 125 different countries, with RPC attacks accounting for nearly 30 per cent of all those recorded.

IT Week notes that the report stated: "The highest levels of attack traffic are from ports targeted by worms, viruses, and bots that spread across the internet several years ago."

This month, email provider MessageLabs expanded its policy-based encryption service to give enterprises a greater level of control over their outbound emails. The new offering includes improved scanning of emails and attachments and support got a wider range of mobile devices.
