Scientists design new defence against internet worms
Researchers from Ohio State University, US, have developed a new way to protect computer systems and networks from internet worms, it has been
reported.
According to news agency ANI, the new tool is able to detect when the malicious code has infected a computer network by monitoring the number of internet addresses scanned by machines on a
network.
Ness Shroff, networking and communications scholar at the university, said that if a machine sends out too many scans, it is a sure sign that it has been infected by an internet worm.
"These worms spread very quickly. They flood the Net with junk traffic and at their most benign, they overload computer networks and shut them down," he explained, adding that one such
virus - Code Red - is believed to have infected over 350,000 machines in less than 14 hours.
Last month, web giant Google released a new set of hosted enterprise security applications, aimed at protecting businesses from malware on the
internet. Google Web Security for Enterprises protects in-office and remote corporate web and email users from viruses, spyware and malware.
