Nearly all data breaches are avoidable, report suggests
A new report released by IP network operator Verizon Business has concluded that as many as nine in ten corporate data breaches
could have been avoided had proper security measures been in place.
Looking at forensic investigations focusing on more than 500 data breaches in the last year, the study concluded that most breaches resulted from external sources, and that over a third could be
attributed to business and supply-chain partners.
It also claimed that 59 per cent of deliberate breaches came about as a result of hacker activity, with nearly half of these aimed at application software vulnerabilities.
"Security breaches and the compromise of sensitive information are very real and growing concerns for organizations worldwide," said Dr. Peter Tippett, of Verizon Business' security
research team. "This report urges organisations to be proactive in their approach to security - the absolute key to safeguarding data."
Meanwhile, a new report from the Identity Theft Resource Center, in the US, has indicated that 57 per cent of stolen personal information
was used open new channels of credit, while 13 per cent was used to order utility services.
