SMEs urged to plan for 'IT disasters'

Many businesses do not have any planning or infrastructure in place to help them survive an IT breakdown, it has been suggested.

According to the managing director of itlab, Dom Monkhouse, small to medium-sized businesses (SMEs) maybe unaware of the simple procedures that can be employed when preparing for the worst.

"A disaster recovery plan does not need to be complicated, nor do its elements need to be expensive. Often, just getting a business’s phones to automatically divert to a location scripted to manage them can make a huge difference," he said.

Mr Monkhouse noted that in the past accidents that have caused SMEs to lose their internet and telephone channels for over a week, leaving some with no option but to cease trading altogether.

Yesterday, specialist IT distributor Bell Micro revealed that as many as 47 per cent of IT workers think their company has not properly protected itself against security risks.
