More skilled staff needed for UC deployment, according to survey

The majority of unified communications (UC) specialists believe that more multi-skilled IT staff are needed for the rollout of the technology, a survey has found.

In a poll of 100 network and applications professionals by voice and video performance provider Psytechnics, 60 per cent said there are too few skilled technical workers to meet the expected UC deployment demand, Computer Weekly reports.

In addition, 75 per cent of respondents said IT professionals with knowledge of both networks and voice and video applications are necessary for successful UC implementation.

Psytechnics claims that the survey's findings show that converged services including Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and UC are harder to implement correctly than previously thought.

"The results of our survey should act as a wake-up call for those in the industry and enterprises who are relying more and more on IP-based communications," said Psytechnics chief executive Anthony Finbow.

In related news, a report by Forrester Research found that many small and medium-sized enterprises fail to understand the benefits of UC implementation.
