Windows 7 given release window
Microsoft has announced that it will launch its next operating system (OS) for PCs in January 2010, approximately three
years after the launch of Windows Vista.
The latest OS, currently referred to as Windows 7, is still in developments, but the software giant assured that it is working hard to make sure that it avoids many of the problems encountered following the
launch of Vista.
In a letter to business customers, Microsoft senior vice-president Bill Veghte said that customers had asked for a more regular, predictable Windows release schedule.
Although he stated that Vista was a significant step forward for the company, Mr Veghte added that Windows 7 would focus on providing wider support for devices and applications.
"Our approach with Windows 7 is to build off the same core architecture as Windows Vista so the investments you and our partners have made in Windows Vista will continue to pay off with
Windows 7," he noted.
Despite selling 20 million copies in its first month of general release, Windows Vista has suffered a slower adoption rate than Microsoft's previous operating system Windows XP.
According to Information Week, six per cent of businesses expected to upgrade to Vista in its first 12 months of release in December
2006, but by October 2007, just one per cent of enterprise PCs were using the OS.
