Broadband and mobile connectivity is top SME priority, study says
Boosting connectivity rather than concentrating on green issues is the "major focus" of SMEs in Wales and across the globe, a study has found.
In its latest survey of eco practice in the information and communication technology (ICT) sector, the Climate Group discovered transforming the way businesses use technology could reduce annual manmade emissions by 15 per cent by 2020, as well as conserving £400 billion of energy.
However, Molly Webb, ICT project director for the Climate Group, insists that while these numbers may excite IT firms, in reality other concerns will continue to be top priority.
She explains: "There is still so much growth to happen in these ICT industries in delivering mobile connectivity globally, in trying to expand broadband access globally. I think that is still a major focus for a lot of companies."
Ms Webb adds that only by recognising that green practice makes commercial as well as environmental sense will real progress by achieved.
According to the Climate Group study, mobile phone ownership will almost double to nearly five billion accounts by 2020, while broadband uptake will treble to almost 900 million accounts over the same period.
